What is Play Therapy?

Gestalt Play Therapy is an approach used with children to facilitate self-awareness, emotional expression and personal growth through play. It integrates principles of Gestalt therapy, which emphasize the importance of the present moment and holistic awareness, with techniques tailored to children’s developmental needs.

In Gestalt Play Therapy, therapists encourage children to engage in various forms of play, such as role-playing, art, storytelling, and games to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The therapist focuses on fostering the child’s self-awareness, self-acceptance, and ability to make healthy choices by facilitating authentic expression and reflection within the therapeutic relationship. This approach aims to help children develop coping skills, improve social interactions, and address emotional issues in a supportive and nonjudgmental environment.

What is the link between Occupational Therapy and Play Therapy?

Occupational therapists help children develop the skills needed to participate in daily activities/occupations including play, self-care, and school-related tasks. They assess a child’s strengths and challenges and then create individual interventions to address areas such as sensory processing, motor coordination, attention and social/emotional skills.

In the context of emotional development, occupational therapists work with children to build self-regulation skills, emotional awareness, and coping strategies. They may use sensory-based interventions, therapeutic play, and activities that promote self-expression to help children identify and manage their emotions effectively.

Through collaboration with parents, teachers and other professionals, occupational therapists create supportive environments that foster emotional growth and resilience in children. They also provide education and guidance to caregivers on how to best support their child’s emotional development in everyday activities.
